[How-To] Get more from your iPod Battery

In one of my previous post, i had written about steps one can take to save mobile battery and make it go longer. However, as we become more technology oriented, saving the battery for longer playback time becomes a concern; iPod is therefore no different. In this post, i shall be talking about a few simple steps which one can take in order to get more juice out of his/her iPod battery.

  • When listening to Music, slide the HOLD switch to ON. This in turn disables power to your iPod’s controls which in turn means saving battery power.
  • Turn off the Equalizer: Go to Settings -> EQ-> Off. Equalizer settings definitely improves the sound quality but they do suck a lot of battery power as well.
  • Turn off the Backlight: Go to Settings -> Backlight -> Off. Switching the backlight to off also saves a lot of battery power.
  • Create your playlists in iTunes: We usually have a tendency to create our playlists using our iPod. Although, this is not a sin but it does take some juice of your iPod battery. So in order to save that precious battery juice create your playlists using iTunes application.
  • When not listening to iPod, set your iPod to sleep: This is one of the best tricks to get the best from your iPod battery. When you are not listening your iPod, keep the play/pause button pressed till it turns off. This is called putting your iPod to sleep.

Do comment and share your tricks on this. I promise to update them in this post 🙂

[How-To] Shutdown your Windows machine instantly

Often we notice that our Windows machine takes a lot of time to Shut down. One of my reader has dropped me a mail writing about the issues like Long wait time for a non responding program to end etc etc. For all such dismayed readers and for all those willing to learn something new, i present this post targeted at shutting down windows machine ( read: PC) instantly.

As all of you know, Windows uses a registry mechanism for many reasons. Some of them being :

  • Separation of “machine” settings from “user” settings.
  • Support for different settings for different users.
  • A centralized location for shared software.
  • Roaming support.
  • Registry level Security.

Also, it must be noted that playing with registry settings can cause harm to your system. Therefore be very cautious about the edits you do with your registry settings.

In order to shut down your Windows PC instantly, the best way is to kill your apps. This is particularly important as many programs just refuse to say a clean bye and prefer hanging in the pool. Follow the steps mentioned below to make your Windows PC shut down instantly by killing such apps.

  • F0llow Start -> Run -> Regedit.
  • Follow upto the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Control Panel->Desktop.

Kill Apps
  • Double click the parameter with name ” WaitToKillAppTimeout“. The value contained in this parameter is in milliseconds. Enter a value based on your patience level. I suggest keeping a value of 1300 if you are really impatient and wish to kill the apps as soon as you press shut down.
    • Double click the parameter with name ” HungAppTimeout“. The value contained in this parameter is in milliseconds. The parameter governs the time to wait before closing Hung Applications. I would suggest keeping a value of 2000 here.
    • Click OK when done. Reboot your PC for the new values to come into force.

Be the BOT: Fool websites by changing your Header

Often on the internet we land up in situations, wherein the search returns exactly what we intend to figure out; however, upon following the link and checking the website, just doesn’t show us the content we came looking for. This usually happens because the owners of such websites usually try to trick the end user to buy or register something.

Whenever a request is usually made over the internet, the request also carries something called as “Header”. The Header information has information pertaining to the browser, the user -agent etc. In case of Google search engine bot ( which keeps crawling the web), this user-agent is “GoogleBot“.

        Be the Bot

Often, the programmer’s of the websites check out the header of the visitor and if it is lets assume ” GoogleBot”, they allow the Bot to read all the data. Therefore, a very simple trick to fool up the programming logic is by making them believe that we are not Firefox/Internet Explorer but GoogleBot 😉

There is a very famous Firefox Addon which can do this trick for you, its called User Agent Switcher. User Agent Switcher adds a menu and a toolbar button to switch the user agent of the browser.

The other way can be to access Be The Bot, the website also does the same thing i.e. Agent Switching.
Follow the Below mentioned steps to access the website and get results of your choice.

        1) Have the URL of the website you wish to use handy.
        2) Enter this URL in “Enter URL” box as shown in the website.

        3) Click Go, and you’re all set.

How-To: Copy and Align Shapes in Microsoft Powerpoint

Often we find it difficult to Align and Copy Shapes in Microsoft Powerpoint. However, its not that tough to achieve and therefore, lets discuss about them in this post.

        Powerpoint Shapes Alignment

        Aligning Shapes
Do you find that it is often difficult to perfectly align shapes in a presentation? By using your arrow buttons while holding down CTRL, you can move shapes one pixel at a time to get the correct alignment.
        Copying Shapes
You can copy a shape from any MS office document and drag it elsewhere by holding down CTRL and your left mouse button. This is a great alternative to cutting and pasting with CTRL+C and CTRL+V.

Google adds Forms Feature to Spreadsheets

This is one of those features which goes very well with the spirit of Google, making use of the information available and presenting it in a meaningful way.

Google docs has added yet another interesting feature which lets a Spreadsheet author send mail invites to other users with fields for the recipients to fill. As the users respond, the spreadsheet gets automatically filled in with the data. What is interesting about this feature is that all this happens at the real time. A clear distinction between desktop and web software.

        Google Docs

To begin playing around with this feature, follow the below mentioned steps.

        • Create a new Google spreadsheet.
        • Fill in some desired column names and values ( if needed).
        • Click on the link called Share.
        • Select radio pointing to the choice fill out a formNEW .
        • Click on Invite Collaborators.

As soon as you are done with this, a mail is sent to the user with the form fields. The beauty of this application is that as users enter the values and submits the form, the spreadsheet automatically gets filled. Also, the users have the option of seeing previous values entered so far.

Clearly, We just don’t need web versions of our desktop software. We, as end users need web software that takes advantage of being online.
