[How-To] Get more from your iPod Battery

In one of my previous post, i had written about steps one can take to save mobile battery and make it go longer. However, as we become more technology oriented, saving the battery for longer playback time becomes a concern; iPod is therefore no different. In this post, i shall be talking about a few simple steps which one can take in order to get more juice out of his/her iPod battery.

  • When listening to Music, slide the HOLD switch to ON. This in turn disables power to your iPod’s controls which in turn means saving battery power.
  • Turn off the Equalizer: Go to Settings -> EQ-> Off. Equalizer settings definitely improves the sound quality but they do suck a lot of battery power as well.
  • Turn off the Backlight: Go to Settings -> Backlight -> Off. Switching the backlight to off also saves a lot of battery power.
  • Create your playlists in iTunes: We usually have a tendency to create our playlists using our iPod. Although, this is not a sin but it does take some juice of your iPod battery. So in order to save that precious battery juice create your playlists using iTunes application.
  • When not listening to iPod, set your iPod to sleep: This is one of the best tricks to get the best from your iPod battery. When you are not listening your iPod, keep the play/pause button pressed till it turns off. This is called putting your iPod to sleep.

Do comment and share your tricks on this. I promise to update them in this post 🙂

[How-To] Scroll to any point in a song on iPod

Usually i get email request from my readers asking for solutions primarily in the area of Windows/ Java/ AntiVirus/ Outlook etc. However, off late i have been getting email requests from readers querying about Apple iPod functionalities.
One such request has come from Mariana who wishes to know the process for scrolling to any point in a song on her newly bought iPod.

In order to scroll to any point in a song on your iPod, follow the steps mentioned below

Apple iPod
  1. From the Now Playing screen, press the Center button. A diamond symbol indicates the point in the song that is selected.
  2. Use the scroll wheel to go to any point in the song. The diamond symbol moves as you scroll, and the elapsed time and time remaining indicators change.
  3. The song continues playing from the point where you stopped scrolling. You may also press the Center button to continue playing.

Microsoft Windows: How to Process Idle Tasks

Running multiple applications simultaneously in Windows for long periods leads to a gradual decrease in system performance over time. Often the only option is a Restart. Even if you close the application in the Task Manager, the tasks/threads associated with the application are not released completely, depleting the system’s memory resources making the system unstable and sluggish. The following tip is designed to offer fast relief:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut
  2. In the text box enter the command:
    %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
  3. Click Next. In the next screen, name the shortcut: for example, Clear Memory
  4. Click on Finish

Whenever you feel that the system is sluggish you can double click on this shortcut and it will take care of the idle tasks by removing them. This can be used before you resort to restarting/rebooting the system.
DISCLAIMER This tip requires changes to processes/components that may lead to undesirable system behavior. While I personally test all tips before publishing them,  I dont takes responsibility for the potential side effects of tips.
Note to this tip: Because this tip involves shutting down application processes, there is the possibility that some applications could be shut down improperly, leading to unexpected application behavior. That said, the following tip has been running happily on my machine for many months without any problems so far.
