Turn off Windows Messenger and improve your PC Performance

There are many windows processes which usually run in the background and thereby tend to eat up system resources and slow down the computer. In my previous post, you learnt how to process idle tasks in Windows.

One of the process which usually starts on its own by default whenever Windows starts is Windows Messenger. If you happen to be one of those who doesn’t use Windows Messenger ( like me 🙂 ) then its in your PC’s best interest that you turn off the Auto mode of Windows messenger which by default loads it into the memory and keeps running it in the background, irrespective of whether you use it or not.

Follow the steps below to disable Windows Messenger on Windows Startup.

1.) Open Windows Messenger by typing ‘msmsgs.exe’ at the Run or double clicking on the program icon under Programs Files folder.

2.) Click on Tools –> Options.

3.) Click on the tab which says ” Preferences”.

4.) De-select the checkbox which says ” Run Windows Messenger when Windows Starts”.

5.) De-select the checkbox which says ” Allow Windows Messenger to run in Background”.

Canon Powershot A470: No frills, entry level digital camera

I recently got a chance to review Canon Powershot A470 camera. This post carries some of my observations of this camera and also the specifications.

Canon Powershot A470 is a compact and easily portable entry level digital camera. Canon’s PowerShot series is known for its user-friendliness and good quality, and the PowerShot A470 upholds that reputation pretty well.

Canon Powershot A470

Canon Powershot A470

Powershot A470 is a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom. For those of you who are new to the term ” Optical Zoom” :

Optical zoom lenses actually move you closer to the subject of the photograph without sacrificing quality. The higher the optical zoom rating on a camera, the farther away you can be to take a photograph and still get a clear, close-up image. The concept of optical zoom essentially the same as the zoom on a film (non-digital) camera. Optical zoom is the number you want to pay close attention to–it’s the zoom that will give you the quality results you want.

Backside of Canon Powershot A470

Backside of Canon Powershot A470

The camera also has a 2.5inch LCD screen, though surprisingly, it doesn’t have a viewfinder. Another important feature which i found missing in it was Image Stabilization. Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques to increase the stability of an image. With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto) lenses.

Canon Powershot A470 comes with 14 preset scene modes for easy photo clicking. Its zoom operation is also smooth. Powershot A470 is powered by 2 AA size batteries. Though, its body casing is plastic, i found it good on the usability front. I liked the Canon A470’s user interface, and found operation simple and straightforward. Though, did find that a couple of more advanced camera settings, such as contrast and Long Shutter mode, were a little hard to find in the Function menu. However, once accustomed to the camera, finding these options is second nature.

Interestingly, the images shot from A470 were sharp at both wide angle and extreme telephoto ends. Priced at 7000 Indian Rupees, Canon Powershot A470 is a no frills camera for someone starting out in digital photography.

Below are the lists of Basic and advanced features alongwith all those items which come packed with Canon A470 Box.

HTTP Response Status Codes

Lifepal has an interesting article about HTTP Response Status Codes. The HTTP request response cycle begins with DNS Lookup and ends with the browser parsing the response after studying the Response headers.

Response headers are a way by which the browser understands what happened when the request was sent to the server. In a way, for the browser its a way to identify answer to many questions like Did the server process the request successfully? Do i need to check in some other location? Is the content being sent in ranges? Is the server available at all or not?

In general , HTTP Status Codes have following meanings.

1xx ( All HTTP Response Status codes beginning with 1) : Status codes that indicate a provisional response and require the requestor to take action to continue.

2xx ( All HTTP Response Status codes beginning with 2) : Status codes that indicate that the server successfully processed the request.

3xx ( All HTTP Response Status codes beginning with 3) : Further action is needed to fulfill the request. Often, these status codes are used for redirection.

4xx ( All HTTP Response Status codes beginning with 4) : These status codes indicate that there was likely an error in the request which prevented the server from being able to process it.

5xx ( All HTTP Response Status codes beginning with 5) : These status codes indicate that the server had an internal error when trying to process the request. These errors tend to be with the server itself, not with the request.

[How-To] Copying data from a corrupted User Profile to a New Profile in Windows XP

Recently one of my reader from Delhi had an issue with his user profile and he wrote to me about it. The issue was that while trying to login to his account, he was getting an error as

Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. You may be logged in using a temporary User Profile.

This is a common issue and may occur if the current user profile is damaged. In order to get rid of this issue, all you need to do is follow the steps below. Broadly, speaking there are only two steps to follow to solve this issue.

A.) Create a new user profile.

B.) Copy the corrupted user’s profile information to the new user.

When you copy user data into a new profile, the new profile becomes a near duplicate of the old profile, and contains the same preferences, appearance, and documents as the old profile. If your old profile is corrupted in some way, you can move the files and settings from the corrupt profile to a new profile.

Microsoft Windows-Logo

Microsoft Windows-Logo

A.) Creating a New User Profile

# Create a new user profile on the domain computer
1. Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced.
5. In the left pane, click the Users folder.
6. On the Action menu, click New User.
7. Enter the appropriate user information, and then click Create.

# Create a new user profile on the workgroup computer
1. Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Under Pick a task, click Create a new account.
5. Type a name for the user information, and then click Next.
6. Click an account type, and then click Create Account.

B.) Copying old files to the new user profile

1. Log on as a user other than the user whose profile you are copying files to or from.
2. In Windows Explorer, click Tools, click Folder Options, click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.
3. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy user data from.
4. Press and hold down the CTRL key while you click each file and subfolder in this folder, except the following files:
• Ntuser.dat
• Ntuser.dat.log
• Ntuser.ini
5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
6. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\New_Username folder, where C is the drive on which Windows XP is installed, and New_Username is the name of the user profile that you created in the “Create a New User Profile” section.
7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
8. Log off the computer, and then log on as the new user.

Caveat: The method that is described in this article may not transfer the Outlook Express e-mail messages and address user data that are associated with the user profile where you are transferring data from. When you delete the old profile, you may delete that data if it you do not first transfer it by using other methods.

In order to stay safe from such issues. The two best practices worth practicing are

1.) Following a backup strategy. Most of us live our life in general with a thought flow ” this cannot happen to me”, get out of such a thought process and stick with ” what will i do,if this happens to me” . Same applies to the world of computers as well. Make it a practice to take regular back-ups. You never know when you will need them. Good news is, You can even Automate your backups. For more information on that read my previous post.

2.) Creating restoration points. Restoration points help you get out of some of most unwarranted and uncalled for situations. Good news is you can even create a Windows Restoration Point by a simple VB Script. For more information on how to create a windows restoration point instantly, read my previous post here.

Whos.amung.us gives you simple yet effective analytics

No doubt that Google Analytics is a powerful and one of the most used analytic tools these days. But for most of you who wish to get simple real time analytics, without having to play with the Javascripts code and going through the complex details in the analytics page; Whos.amung.us is the service to check.

This service comes handy with my earlier post Website : Tech Profiles, SEO Grade and Hosting details. It’s no surprise that over two billion widgets have been served within our first 6 months! If you run a website, blog or a social network page like MySpace, WordPress.com ( mostly services which dont allow Javascript embedding) then this is something for you.

In order to start getting real time results from whos.amung.us all you need to do is embed a small piece of HTML code onto your pages for which you wish to have the analytics. Get that code from here

How it all works?

The HTML Code snippet which you embed into your blog/website calls an image hosted on whos.amung.us servers. When the request for the image is made, along with the IP , the browser also sends some more information in the headers; like Referrer URL, User agents etc. Whos.amung.us then makes use of the IP and the Referrer URL to include results for Country from which the recent visitor came and also the URL he came from. i.e. in this case, the URL of the blog entry the reader is reading as of now.

Whos.amung.us gives you three different kind of analytic views:

1.) Links with the numbers of readers simultaneously reading the posts

Whos.amung.us-links with number of readers

Whos.amung.us-links with number of readers

2.) Graphs for checking out the number of simultaneous readers you have had on your blog/website for any given month, day or even hour.

Whos.amung.us-Graph view

Whos.amung.us-Graph view

3.) Map view gives you the visual of the location for every one of your readers — live!

Whos.amung.us-Map View

Whos.amung.us-Map View

4.) On your blog, the image keeps getting updated as well with the number of readers reading your blog concurrently.

Whos.amung.us-View on your Blog

Blog View

Its interesting to see who.amung.us taking out so much information from a simple image hit. Its time other analytic providers also take a note of this. I would really be amused if they could also add the user-agent part, it helps track one of the most important detail about your readers/users ; the browser they use 🙂

Kingsoft Office 2007: Microsoft Office comes free

For most of us who use Windows for our day to day computing, Microsoft Office is certainly the most easy to use productivity suite. Also, the three most popluar productivity applications which come as part of the Microsoft Office Suite are MS Word, MS Excel and MS Power Point. However, the only catch is, these applications don’t come free; which leads us to use either open source software like OpenOffice.

Though, OpenOffice has been around since quite sometime now, the only reason why many still prefer to use Microsoft Office can be related to the way humans are often tuned to behave. As known, we can do a lots with Microsoft Office like Creating Basic Chart using MS Excel, Calculating our Equated Monthly Installments, playing games on MS Excel being some of them we have already discussed in past. The issue with softwares like OpenOffice is that the move from MS Office to OpenOffice is not so easy. Changes in the menu, functions, process steps etc are not exactly as in MS Office and this leads to de-motivating factor for lots of those who do wish to make a move from MS Office to other Office solutions like OpenOffice. Therefore the lack of intuitiveness of MS Office is certainly an issue. However, this issue now gets resolved with KingSoft Office 2007.

KingSoft Office 2007

KingSoft Office 2007

Kingsoft Office contains Writer, Presentation and Spreadsheets and is ready out-of-the-box, allowing you to start creating rich documents straight away. The three applications in KingSoft Office 2007 allows you to create .DOC, .PPT and .XLS files with ease. The overall interface of KingSoft Office 2007 is also exactly a replica of MS Office 2003. This leads to one of the major benefits for the users ; ZERO LEARNING PHASE for getting used to KingSoft Office 2007. To be short and precise, KingSoft Office 2007 is exactly a replica of MS Office 2003 without MS Logo 🙂

KingSoft Writer

KingSoft Writer

Side Display

Side Display

With KingSoft Office 2007, you can efficiently create and edit word documents, spreadsheets and slideshow presentations. The office suite comes with lots of templates as well to get you started. Also another interesting feature is Save as PDF’s which is missing in MS Office 2003.

KingSoft Spreadsheet

KingSoft Spreadsheet

Elena from Softonic says

I must admit these three apps are almost identical to their Microsoft Office equivalents, so identical in fact I’m beginning to wonder if it’s just a copy. Whatever the Kingsoft developers used to create the suite, I’m happy to be able a complete suite without having to pay for it. Also, the fact that it’s so similar to other suites you may have been using up to know makes the learning curve practically non-existent.

At present KingSoft Office 2007 is available only as a 100 day trial version. However, the company is coming out soon with the entirely free version shortly this month. The website says

At present the KSO09 license downloadable from the website will expire after 100 days. In order to allow you to maintain a totally free version we will shortly be releasing a newer version of our KSO07 as a personal edition with a license created for home use. Why not try KSO09 100 day trial before you decide whether to go KSO07 free or KSO09 available to buy as a single user or site license, allowing you to purchase once and install on as many computers you have at your location.

In the past, i have also used OpenOffice but after using KingSoft Office, i got a feeling that this is no different from MS Excel. A feeling which was certainly missing in OpenOffice and Google Docs.

Kingsoft PowerPoint

Kingsoft PowerPoint

I feel on the downside, KingSoft Office still has some more way to go till they also release clones of MS Outlook, MS access and MS Publisher in their further releases. For now, it certainly is a great suite to use for two lethal combinations; Zero License fees and the comfort of MS Office.

I dare say ; Competitors Watch out, the King is in 🙂
