[How-To] Calculate Equated Monthly Installment using MS Excel

Excel is definitely a very powerful tool and i attribute the reason for its success to the fact that it was able to change the way people used to compute earlier. The fact that Excel was able to change the behavior of people is the real reason for its success. Therefore, it also holds a very key lesson, if we can create softwares which in turn lead to change the way people live/ work/ behave, those softwares shall certainly be big hits 🙂

In this post, i shall share with you the formula available in Excel to calculate Equated Monthly Installment.

Lets assume we need to calculate Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) for a principal of 1,00,000 for a period of 1 year (12 months) at a rate of 11%. In order to compute Monthly Installment using Microsoft Excel, follow the below mentioned steps.

1.) Go to Fx and select PMT from Financial.

Using PMT to compute EMI

2.) Enter Rate of Interest. Mention it as 0.11/12 [ 11% divided by 12]

PMT nper

3.) Enter value for “Nper” as 12 for our case of 1 year. [ number of years multiplied by 12]

4.) Enter 100000 as the value for Principal in the field called Pv.

5.) Press Ok to get the result as 8838.17.

[How-To] Get more from your iPod Battery

In one of my previous post, i had written about steps one can take to save mobile battery and make it go longer. However, as we become more technology oriented, saving the battery for longer playback time becomes a concern; iPod is therefore no different. In this post, i shall be talking about a few simple steps which one can take in order to get more juice out of his/her iPod battery.

  • When listening to Music, slide the HOLD switch to ON. This in turn disables power to your iPod’s controls which in turn means saving battery power.
  • Turn off the Equalizer: Go to Settings -> EQ-> Off. Equalizer settings definitely improves the sound quality but they do suck a lot of battery power as well.
  • Turn off the Backlight: Go to Settings -> Backlight -> Off. Switching the backlight to off also saves a lot of battery power.
  • Create your playlists in iTunes: We usually have a tendency to create our playlists using our iPod. Although, this is not a sin but it does take some juice of your iPod battery. So in order to save that precious battery juice create your playlists using iTunes application.
  • When not listening to iPod, set your iPod to sleep: This is one of the best tricks to get the best from your iPod battery. When you are not listening your iPod, keep the play/pause button pressed till it turns off. This is called putting your iPod to sleep.

Do comment and share your tricks on this. I promise to update them in this post 🙂

[How-To] Scroll to any point in a song on iPod

Usually i get email request from my readers asking for solutions primarily in the area of Windows/ Java/ AntiVirus/ Outlook etc. However, off late i have been getting email requests from readers querying about Apple iPod functionalities.
One such request has come from Mariana who wishes to know the process for scrolling to any point in a song on her newly bought iPod.

In order to scroll to any point in a song on your iPod, follow the steps mentioned below

Apple iPod
  1. From the Now Playing screen, press the Center button. A diamond symbol indicates the point in the song that is selected.

[How-To] Shutdown your Windows machine instantly

Often we notice that our Windows machine takes a lot of time to Shut down. One of my reader has dropped me a mail writing about the issues like Long wait time for a non responding program to end etc etc. For all such dismayed readers and for all those willing to learn something new, i present this post targeted at shutting down windows machine ( read: PC) instantly.

As all of you know, Windows uses a registry mechanism for many reasons. Some of them being :

  • Separation of “machine” settings from “user” settings.
  • Support for different settings for different users.
  • A centralized location for shared software.
  • Roaming support.
  • Registry level Security.

Also, it must be noted that playing with registry settings can cause harm to your system. Therefore be very cautious about the edits you do with your registry settings.

In order to shut down your Windows PC instantly, the best way is to kill your apps. This is particularly important as many programs just refuse to say a clean bye and prefer hanging in the pool. Follow the steps mentioned below to make your Windows PC shut down instantly by killing such apps.

  • F0llow Start -> Run -> Regedit.
  • Follow upto the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Control Panel->Desktop.

Kill Apps
  • Double click the parameter with name ” WaitToKillAppTimeout“. The value contained in this parameter is in milliseconds. Enter a value based on your patience level. I suggest keeping a value of 1300 if you are really impatient and wish to kill the apps as soon as you press shut down.
    • Double click the parameter with name ” HungAppTimeout“. The value contained in this parameter is in milliseconds. The parameter governs the time to wait before closing Hung Applications. I would suggest keeping a value of 2000 here.
    • Click OK when done. Reboot your PC for the new values to come into force.
