IMEI: What is it?

Most of the people i meet and interact with, know how to figure out the IMEI number on a mobile handset. However, when i ask them anything more about IMEI, they just go blank. Therefore for the information of them and for all those interested to know about IMEI, I am putting up this post 🙂

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15 or 17 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network. The IMEI number facilitates an important function; it easily identifies a mobile phone being used on a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network.

An important usage of IEMI;which is often talked about in the fraternity of mobile users is with regards to the stealth of mobile. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to “ban” the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, regardless of whether the phone’s SIM is changed.

There are a few ways in which you can locate your mobile phone’s IMEI number, it can usually be found on the handset, beneath the battery, sometimes printed on a small white label. Another way to easily locate your IMEI phone is to dial the following sequence of numbers into the handset: *#06#. If you have a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, you can retrieve the IMEI by pressing the following key sequence: right,*, left, left,*, left, *, left.

The last number of the IMEI is called the Check Digit and is defined using a formula called “Luhn formula“, thus sometimes the last digit is called the Luhn Check Digit and does not necessarily always set to 0.

You can follow this link and do an analysis of your IMEI number.

  4. Hi,

It would be great if anyone knows how to disable handset. Need to stop the theft menece which is causing not only monetary loss but also losing all the contact numbers saved in your mobiles

  5. Tracking and blocking a stolen mobile handset is not available to everybody in India. BSNL has made it clear that they extend such services only under special conditions like cracking down a criminal case, or terror cases. Same with other mobile telecommunication service providers.

However, tracking/blocking can no longer be done if the SIM is changed before the IMEI is posted to the service provider. Also, the phone can be tracked/blocked irrespective of SIM only if all the service providers share the IMEI number when it is reported. See
